Daily Action for Monday, June 5th: Save Healthcare and the Planet Edition

Federal:

Our calls are working. The Republican senator Richard Burr has said that he does not see “comprehensive” health care reform happening this year. But we can’t stop now; we have already seen how Trumpcare was revived from the dead in the House. There is no reason that it can’t happen again. It is important to keep calling our senators and representatives and demanding that they protect Medicaid and pre-existing conditions. Cancer patients should not be denied healthcare just because they have cancer.

Call Rob Portman and demand that he fixes Obamacare, rather than just repeal it. Urge him to protect Medicaid and pre-existing conditions.

Call Bob Latta and ask him what he plans to do if Ohio reduces Medicaid and guts protections for pre-existing conditions, all things that are possible because of the bill Latta signed.

Please only call Bob Latta if you live in Ohio District 5.

Please only call Rob Portman if you live in Ohio.

State:

Last week Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement, a global pact signed by 195 countries to reduce carbon emissions. Make no mistake, Trump’s decision has made the US weaker and less respected in the world; it will also put the brakes on clean energy technology, one of America’s fastest growing industries. Trump’s abdication of leadership will make America less safe, will make our air and water less clean, and will even cost us jobs.

But there is some good news. Even if the federal government has given up on the Paris Agreement, this does not mean that Ohio has. Already the states of California, New York, Washington, and Massachusetts have vowed to uphold the standards of the Paris Accord even if Trump refuses. We need to add Ohio to this list. It’s time to call your local state representatives, senators, and even mayors to demand that Ohio keep to the terms of the Paris Accords. In this we have support from Republicans: our governor, John Kasich, has condemned Trump’s withdrawal from the treaty: (https://www.facebook.com/notes/john-kasich/statement-from-gov-john-kasich-on-the-united-states-withdrawal-from-the-paris-ag/10154471450205933/ ). And our own district has benefitted from investments into clean energy; wind farms in Paulding and Van Wert counties have injected a great deal of money into the local economy.

Call your state representative and senator and demand that Ohio keeps to the terms of the Paris Agreement. Tell them you agree with Governor Kasich, and tell them how clean energy has helped our communities.

Call John Kasich and demand that he take his own words seriously. Demand that he issue an executive order or a commitment for Ohio to maintain the Paris Agreement.

Please only call the representatives of your community.

Please only call John Kasich if you live in Ohio.

Governor John Kasich: (614) 466-3555

Ohio districts are heavily gerrymandered, so it is recommended you use the official Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate sites to look up your local representatives. In some cases, you may have to enter the 9 digit zip code to pinpoint your exact location.
